The Inkvolt mark: an ink drop with a lightning bolt

InkvoltA Bermudez Systems LLC product

A PDF editor and a printer app for Windows that keep your files on your PC.

Inkvolt PDF reads, marks up, fills, signs, compares and converts PDFs. Inkvolt Print sets up network printers, HP and other brands, shows their status and ink or toner, scans and prints. They are two separate apps that share code and install together: a scan opens in Inkvolt PDF, and Inkvolt PDF knows the printer's state before it prints. Both are free and open source, with no account, no cloud service and no telemetry.

01Inkvolt PDF

A fast PDF viewer and editor built natively for Windows 11, on ARM64 as well as x64, with .NET 10 and the MuPDF engine. Documents open in tabs, each file reopens where you left it, and every command is in a palette (Ctrl+K), so nothing is more than a search away.

Comments and drawing: a stamp, highlights, a rectangle and a callout, with the style bar above the page and every comment listed on the left

Reading

Continuous, single or two-page views, fit width or fit page, pinch to zoom, full screen, page labels, bookmarks you can edit, search across the document, dark pages for night reading, and Read Aloud with a Windows voice. Split view shows two places of the same document at once, each with its own page and zoom.

Comments, drawing and measuring

Highlight, underline and strike out text, add sticky notes and stamps (Approved, Draft and your own), and draw with a pen, highlighter, rectangle, ellipse, line, arrow, text box or callout. Measure distances, perimeters and areas at the page's scale (set it, or calibrate on a known length); measurements are saved as comments in the PDF's standard measuring format.

Edit text and images

A first step: click a piece of text to replace it in place, in the font the PDF already embeds, with a live note of how much wider or narrower it gets. Text doesn't reflow, and only characters that font holds can be typed. Pictures on the page can be moved, resized, replaced or deleted.

Forms and Fill & Sign

Fill text fields, check boxes and lists, with the form's own calculations; type text or tick marks anywhere, and place a handwritten signature or initials. Prepare Form adds fields of your own (text, check boxes, radio buttons, lists, signature fields, buttons) with formats and tab order, and Detect Fields suggests them from the lines, boxes and underscores on the page.

Digital signatures

Sign with a certificate from Windows (smart cards and Windows Hello included) or a .pfx file, with an optional timestamp. Existing signatures are verified, including any change made to the file after signing.

Organize pages

A grid of large pages: drag to reorder, rotate, delete, insert, extract, split, duplicate or crop, and combine several files into one. Add headers, footers, page numbers and a text or image watermark. Every edit can be undone.

Compare files

Pick the original and the changed PDF: the text is compared word by word across the whole document, and the pages are shown side by side with inserted, removed and changed words marked. Visual compare overlays the pages, for drawings and scans. Annotated Copy turns each text change into a comment you can share.

Convert, export and OCR

Make PDFs from Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (with the Microsoft Office on your PC), from web pages and from images. Export to Word, Excel or plain text as a starting point for editing; forms come out as forms, with fill-in lines, labels and boxes where they were and accents typeset apart joined to their letters. Recognize Text gives scanned pages a searchable layer with Windows' own OCR, on your PC. Save as PDF/A-2b makes an archival copy.

Redact and sanitize

Redact areas, selected text or every match of a search, and the content is removed from the file for good. Sanitize Document counts what a file carries besides its pages (metadata, hidden layers, scripts, attachments, links, comments), removes what you choose, and checks the result again.

Protect, compact and batch

Password protection with AES-256 and permissions for printing, copying and editing; later edits keep it. Reduce File Size recompresses images and shows the size before and after. Batch runs a list of actions (these, a watermark, Bates numbers, OCR, an export) on many files into a folder you choose, never replacing the originals.

Pictures, links and attachments

Place a picture from a file or the clipboard and move or resize it; add links to a web or email address or to a page of the document; attach files and open attached PDFs in a tab; show or hide layers; and flatten comments and form fields into the pages when they should no longer change.

Print

Prints in the background, one sheet at a time. Print with Options adds several pages per sheet, booklets (sheets ordered so the folded stack reads in order) and posters across several sheets, with a sketch of the first sheet. With Inkvolt Print installed, it checks the printer first and says if it is offline or out of paper.

AI assistant, bring your own

Off by default: Inkvolt PDF has no AI of its own. If you want one, connect a model on your PC (Ollama, LM Studio), on your network, or an OpenAI-compatible service with your own key, to summarize pages, ask about the document or explain a passage. Before a send, it shows where the text goes and exactly what it is. What is sent, and where.

Accessible

Screen-reader names for pages, fields, links and lists, caret browsing, keyboard access to every pane, high-contrast support, and each button's shortcut in its tooltip.

Fill & Sign on a W-9, with made-up details
Organize pages (Ctrl+Shift+O)
The command palette (Ctrl+K)
Dark theme, with dark pages for night reading
A watermark, written into the pages

Inkvolt PDF also opens XPS, EPUB, CBZ, FB2 and images, and makes a new PDF from a picture on the clipboard.

02Inkvolt Print

A lean app for network printers, made for HP and also working with Canon, Epson, Brother and any IPP Everywhere or Mopria printer. It finds the printer on your network and shows what matters: ready or asleep, ink or toner, paper problems, updated live. It talks to the printer directly, in the printer's own protocols, with no account, no cloud service and no background services.

The overview of a demo printer, with its print queue: its address is from the range reserved for documentation, its serial number and jobs made up

Find and set up

Printers on the local network are found automatically, whatever the brand, or added by IP address. One click sets the printer up in Windows with Windows' own driver: nothing to download. Printers already set up in Windows show up too, USB ones included, with the status Windows and the driver report.

Status and supplies

Ready, sleeping, out of paper, jammed or door open, in plain words; ink or toner levels, and for HP printers the pages left and the cartridge to buy. An HP printer tells Inkvolt Print when something changes, so an idle one costs one request a minute.

HP and other brands

Canon, Epson, Brother and other IPP Everywhere or Mopria printers get status, supplies, alerts and eSCL scanning. Older network printers that don't speak IPP get status and supplies over SNMP, and scanners without eSCL (USB, or with only a Windows driver) scan through Windows. Printer settings, firmware updates and page counts use HP's own interface, so they are HP only. Newer HP models that only speak CDM show status and supplies, read only.

Printer offline fixer

Fix it… on a printer that stopped answering checks step by step: the Print Spooler, the printer at a new address, and Windows queues that are paused, set to offline or holding stuck jobs. Each problem found gets its own repair button.

Scan

From the glass or the document feeder, several pages at a time, in color or grayscale. Review the pages before saving: turn, crop, reorder, skip blank pages, straighten. Save as JPEG or as a searchable PDF, with text recognition running on your PC.

One-click scans

Presets scan with one click (or Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9) and save by themselves: to Documents, Pictures, a OneDrive or Dropbox folder on your PC or any folder, named from a template such as the date and a counter. Then, if you like, open the scan in Inkvolt PDF, print a copy or start an email in your mail app.

One scan, several files

A feeder run of many documents is split into files at separator sheets (patch codes; Inkvolt Print prints one for you) or at blank pages, and the review shows where each file starts. Several photos laid on the glass are found and saved as pictures of their own, cut out straight.

Print and copy

PDFs with copies, page ranges and two-sided printing through the Windows print queue. Photos full page, at standard sizes (4 × 6, 5 × 7, wallet and more) or on a contact sheet, each sheet previewed as it prints. Copy a document, or both sides of an ID card onto one page.

Settings and maintenance

An HP printer's own settings, such as sleep, auto-off, two-sided printing and automatic firmware updates, offering only the values it accepts; the admin password is only ever sent over HTTPS. Maintenance offers only what the printer advertises (HP's reports, cleaning and alignment; Identify on other printers), each confirmed first.

Alerts, if you want them

Off by default. Turned on, an icon in the notification area shows the worst state of your printers, and a Windows notification says once when ink or toner runs low, paper jams or runs out, or a printer stops answering. Quiet hours and pause; no ads, no shop links.

Built and tested on an HP LaserJet MFP M234dw, over HP's LEDM and the standard IPP and eSCL protocols that other makers' printers speak too. Newer HP models that only speak CDM get status and supplies but no settings page yet; USB-only printers aren't supported.

03Together

Two apps rather than one large one: Inkvolt Print stays small, and Inkvolt PDF uses Inkvolt Print's printer code instead of keeping a copy of its own.

  • Scan into Inkvolt PDF. File › Scan… or Organize › Insert from Scanner… scans into a new document or into the open one at the position you choose, with a searchable text layer.
  • Printer status before printing. After the Print dialog, Inkvolt PDF checks a printer Inkvolt Print knows and asks before sending a job to one that is offline, out of paper or jammed. The check only reads, and gives up after two seconds.
  • Open in Inkvolt PDF. Inkvolt Print hands a saved scan to Inkvolt PDF, or opens every scan there automatically.
  • One installer. The suite installs both apps with a Start Menu folder, and uninstalling removes only what it added.

04Privacy

Neither app has an account, analytics, ads or telemetry, and neither sends your documents or scans anywhere on its own. Settings, recent files and logs stay in your own app data folder.

Inkvolt PDF goes online only when you ask it to: a timestamp server when you sign with a timestamp (only a hash of the signature is sent), certificate revocation checks when you verify a signature, a web page you turn into a PDF, links you click in a document, and the AI assistant, if you connect one outside your PC and network. Its scanning and printer status, and everything Inkvolt Print does, stay on your local network; a scan you save to a OneDrive or Dropbox folder, or email, is sent on by that app.

Read the privacy policy.

05Open source

Both apps are open source, with their full history on GitHub. You can read the code, build it yourself, and see exactly what talks to the network.

07Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no paid tier, no trial, no ads and no account. The source is public, so you can also build it yourself.

Are the apps in the Microsoft Store?

Yes, both, for x64 and ARM64, with updates through the Store: get Inkvolt PDF (opens in a new tab) and get Inkvolt Print (opens in a new tab).

Is Inkvolt Print made by HP?

No. Inkvolt Print is an independent project by Bermudez Systems, not affiliated with or endorsed by HP Inc. It works with HP printers over their own network interfaces, and with HP and other printers over the standard IPP and eSCL protocols.

Does Inkvolt Print work with my Canon, Epson or Brother printer?

If it's a network printer that supports IPP Everywhere or Mopria, Inkvolt Print sets it up in Windows, shows its status, ink or toner and alerts, scans from it if it has a scanner, and prints and copies through it. An older network printer without IPP still shows its status and supplies over SNMP, and a USB printer set up in Windows shows up with the status its driver reports; a scanner without AirScan scans through its Windows driver. Printer settings, firmware updates, page counts and HP's maintenance pages are HP only; other printers get Identify and, when they offer one, a link to their own maintenance page.

Does Inkvolt PDF use AI?

Only if you set it up. Inkvolt PDF has no AI of its own and the assistant is off by default. You can connect one you choose, on your PC, your network or a cloud service with your own account, and nothing is sent until you confirm. The privacy policy says what is sent, and where.

Do I need both apps?

No. Each works on its own. Installed together, Inkvolt PDF can scan through your printer and check it before printing, and Inkvolt Print can open scans in Inkvolt PDF.

Why are the licenses different?

Inkvolt PDF renders pages with MuPDF, which is licensed under the AGPL, so Inkvolt PDF is too. Inkvolt Print has no such dependency and uses the MIT License.
